Reducing Suicide: The Means Matter Campaign David Hemenway, PhD

Suicide is the leading cause of injury death in the United States—more Americans die from suicide than from homicide, motor vehicle crashes, or unintentional poisonings. Many of the suicides are preventable. Indeed, it is possible to dramatically reduce the US suicide rate without changing anyone’s mental health or changing any laws. This talk will focus on how the Means Matter Campaign is translating injury science into prevention by working with physicians and first responders and finding common ground with groups that sometimes seem antagonistic to the public health method and findings.

Treasure Maps: Using Economic Evidence to Pinpoint Prized Prevention Investments Ted Miller, PhD

How costly is injury? What use are estimates of dollar savings from injury prevention? What programs are especially cost-effective? What do you need to assess the cost-effectiveness of your programs? How have communities used cost-effectiveness information to increase prevention funding? This session will address these questions, helping illuminate a proven path to prevention investment.
